Oceania boasts a wide range of vibrant cultures with unique traditions and values. Recently, this was highlighted by Emanuela Mataio (a badminton player from the Cook Islands) who underwent a haircutting ceremony – a rite of passage for young boys which takes place in front of friends and family.
Starting with the player packs which were handed to the players during the opening ceremony by a representative from the Bank of Cook Islands (a tournament sponsor), with the contents representing the hard work of the Badminton Cook Islands organising committee.
Former badminton (senior) world champion Loke Poh Wong, who was recently elected the president of Badminton Oceania, will participate in the Oceania Masters in Paradise 2022 team tournament which starts this morning at the National Sports Arena in Nikao.
Badminton has soared in popularity over the last two years in the Cook Islands. The sport has capitalised on the Covid-19 lockdowns and guidelines that restricted the country’s contact sports (rugby and soccer) in early 2020.
