Rugby contest heats up

Two interesting contests are on the menu in the Rarotonga club rugby competition today.

The Avatiu Eels will face the Titikaveka Bulls, with the teams facing each other back in the opening round of the competition.

The Eels were victorious on that occasion 29-5, with the Bulls being competitive but lacked organisation on defence.

The Bulls are having a lacklustre season, having lost all four of their current games to date.

However, they have some quality players in their team and they do have the potential to upset any of the competition teams on their day. But they will need to play as a team. Players to hopefully inspire the Bulls towards victory this weekend include abrasive Number 8 Eddie Qio and his loose forward partner Timo Tangirere, prop Clerk Ngaau, and 18-year-old utility back Tomasi Bikaka.

The Eels’ standout players so far this year have been Number 8 Tokerau Raru, prop Toru Katuke and the goalkicking midfielder Leki Hevala and Lae Rokorokoivalu.

Prediction: if the Bulls can get an early lead and play with some self-belief this will be a great contest to watch. If they don’t it will be another long day at the office for the Bulls.

Meanwhile at Victoria Park, the Tupapa Panthers will face the Arorangi Cowboys.

Both teams suffered losses last weekend and will be out to grab precious competition points as no doubt both will be out to make amends from their losses last Saturday.

Players to watch are: Panthers – a hardworking forward pack lead by their front rowers; Makea Tupa, John Vano, and veteran lock Maine Rongo.  As for the Cowboys, watch out for their youngsters - lock Tanire Mokoroa, hooker Nelson Ngaiorae and first 5/8 Leo Roa.
