The Cowboys defeated favourites Takuvaine Reds 20-10 in The Bond Store game of the week at Raemaru Park.
With their new and impressive kit, the Reds led at the halftime break by 7-0 and then extended their lead to 10-0 early in the second half.
However, it was the impact of the Cowboys’ reserves bench in the second half that helped to push the home side over the line.
The Cowboys revival was led by energetic prop Daniel ‘Magic’ Tonorio, who also scored a great 30-metre solo try straight off a penalty tap move. Their 20-10 win was sealed by the second try from Andre Iro.
The Reds did have some point-scoring opportunities of their own, especially in the first half, but were let down by handling errors.
Impressive for the Reds were hooker Murare John Jr, loose forward Tuku Samuel, and fullback Viiga Ruepena.
The Cowboys were led by loose forwards Geoff Taripo and Rhys Evans, and also 19-year-old flyhalf Matt Maui, who kicked 10 points with the boot.
In the other Senior A match, Tupapa Panthers maintained their winning streak after beating Titikaveka Bulls 20-0 at Victoria Park.
A dominant Panthers forward effort led by Makea Tupa, Maine Rongo and Kana Nga set the foundation for this win over the visiting Bulls.
The best players for the Bulls were utility back Eli Bendini and forward Clerk Ngaau. The Panthers led 8-0 at halftime.
