Swimmers brave ‘incredibly tough’ water conditions in the 38th annual Tin Man triathlon.

Newbies vied with veterans in this weekend’s Tin Man: Roland Neururer took out the men’s title for the 10th time, and Adrianna Skurosz returned for her second victory in the women’s competition.

But in rough water conditions, the strongest veteran swimmers had a new generation hard on their heels: Darius Allsworth, 12, Anais Quirke, 13, and Seychelle Carter, 14, all emerged onto the beach at the 24 minute mark, ahead of most adults.

The weather was bright and clear, “a wonderful day” for the final event of the Cook Islands Triathlon Association season. Competitors swum 1200 metres, cycled 31km, then ran 10km.

Mike Carr, competing in his 30th Tin Man, moved progressively up the field to take 3rd place. And a couple of generations younger, Seychelle Carter completed the whole event in just 2:50:44.

Organiser and competitor Lucy Mcdonald said conditions on the water were incredibly tough with wind chop, big swell and waves breaking onto the swimmers as they battled the currents.

That was echoed by Neururer: “It was rough,” he said.

“The northerly wind started picking up so for the not-so-good swimmers it was really, really hard. Me, I’m a strong swimmer and I loved it!

“Seeing these 13 and 14-year-olds come through, I was really worrised for them I but they did very well.”

Tem Strickland was first out of the water in 21:07, followed closely by Sherrid Carter in 22:16 and Neururer in 22:19.

Seven-time winner Serena Hunter, this year competing in for “The Girls” team, was just one second behind Neururer.

It was Neururer who took the lead in the bike ride to Nikao and back, and he never relinquished it.

The 10km run course turned up to the back road in Aro’a and brought competitors past the start finish line five times, allowing the hearty crowd of spectators great opportunity to cheer on the weary participants.

It allowed them to see how the places were changing, as their legs grew heavier and more tired with each passing kilometre.

The Triathlon Association thanked generous sponsors BSP, the Bond Store, the Edgewater Resort and Spa, Aroa Vegeland, Air New Zealand, Island Car and Bike Hire, CITC, Vaima Water, Paradise Supplies and KPMG.

“To the many people who give their time to assist the events run smoothly and give their support a huge meitaki ma‘ata,” said Mcdonald.

“Without their help with marshalling, water safety, drinks stations, filming and photography, timekeeping and numbering, and preparing and cooking food, the events just wouldn’t happen.”
