Olympian and former Sunburst National Champ Taua Elisa and his crew, Alyce Edwards and Adrian Cooling, are expected to lead the charge in Saturday’s sailing races.

Elisa and his crew were in a newly painted yacht a week ago preparing for the 2019 Cook Islands National Sunburst Championship that is to be held at Muri Beach.

Also competing are Rick Hickling and Sheldon Milner, the brother-sister combination of George and Grace Newman-Holt and the mother-son combination of Rachel Smith and Jesse Easterbrook.

Organised by the Rarotonga Sailing Club  for Sailing Cook Islands, the organisation says the rivalry between the teams will make for spectacular racing.

The Sailing Club says that those with technical difficulties last time, but who shouldn’t be written off, were the Steve Whitta and Adrian Hopwood combination and Sailing Club Vice-Commodore Tom McDonald and Matt Easterbrook.

The event has attracted a good number of entries and many Sunbursts stored at the Rarotonga Sailing Club have been dusted off and prepared for racing.

The organisation explained that a Sunburst is a 3.5 metre yacht that usually has two crew members. It was designed in the late 1960s and has become a popular class of boat for beginner sailors as well as for racing.

Everybody is welcome to come down and see the action. The best viewing spot will be at Sails Restaurant. Racing starts at 9.00am and is expected to run throughout the day.
