The open women’s category saw a close sprint to the finish line, as Erin Quirke just managed to edge Victoria Dearlove and claim the overall series champion with a time of 55.38 minutes over the 7.5km course.
Husband and wife duo Kevin and Mona Henderson claimed the open men and masters women categories, respectively, as well as winning the over all series.
Tereapii Matamaki from Papaaroa School won his third race in a row, completing the 3km course in 12.50 minutes, ahead of Sireli Ratu in the youth under-16.
Unfortunately for Matamaki, it wasn’t enough to dislodge Ratu who finished the series overall champion in the points table.
A 20 seconds victory by Mareta Matamaki saw him win the boys’ U14 race, while in the girls’ category, Taina Marsters won comfortably in a time of 17.19 minutes.
In the overall school participation standings, Papaaroa claimed the bragging rights on 50 points, edging out Apii Te Uki Ou, on 41 points.
Event director Thomas Henderson said the series was a great starting point for future seasons.
“We started small at our first race back in June, and I am really pleased with the momentum each event has created, especially with in regards to the kids,” Henderson said.
“This year’s series is merely a baseline to reigniting the running event bigger and better next year.”
