Cross Country series set for season finale

Maybe it was the afternoon before the final day of the school term that saw a small contingent of juniors attend race six of the Rarotonga Cross Country Championships last week.

The challenging uphill course of Tereora College proved to be an even bigger challenge a second time round for the open and masters participants, especially with yet another weekly increase in distance for them.

Kevin Henderson comfortably took out the open men’s nine kilometre course in an impressive 46:02 minutes.

Although it could have been a different story if Cook Islands Olympian runner Alex Beddoes was not mistaken for a youngster due to his natural and youthful stride that saw him placed in the 19 and under junior category.

Tereapii Matamaki dominated yet again the junior boys category with a time of 15:22 minutes, while Jeremiah Mata finished second with just 33 seconds behind.

Seth Raela from Nukutere College continued his impressive run, finishing on third place.

Penina Katuke claimed the girls 14 and under category followed closely behind by Alana Breed in second and Lily Tierney finishing on third.

This afternoon concludes the Rarotonga Cross Country Championships for 2017 at the Rarotonga Golf Club in Nikao.

Registration opens from 4pm with $2 for all open and masters competitors and $1 for all junior and youth athletes.

Distance categories to be competed in the junior 16 and under and youth 14 and under boys and girls is 3km.

Junior girls 19 and under and masters women will compete in 5.5km run while junior boys 19 and under, open women, and masters men are set for 7.5km run. The open men will compete in the 9.5km.  The first event is scheduled to start at 4.45pm.

So do get those running legs down to the start line for the challenge and recognition in being the best in Rarotonga, trading stride for stride with the best this season.
