Volleyball gets an extra six teams

Six more teams have been registered for the Prime Foods Mixed Social League Volleyball competition which started last week.

For the opening round of the weekly league at the Bluesky Sports Arena in Nikao, 18 teams were registered to compete.

Six more teams joined in late last week, taking the total teams in the competition to 24.

Cook Islands Volleyball Federation president Hugh Graham was pleased with the interest.

He said they had to do minor changes ahead of the round two competition tonight.

“The times remain the same as last week, except there is an additional time slot starting at 8.45pm,” Graham said.

“It is anticipated that we will adjust the start time as of next week’s games (Wednesday, June 14) to 5.30pm so that the last games don’t finish too late.  “The other option is to reduce the 50 minutes per game to perhaps 40 or 45 minute games.”

Graham said due to the increase in the team numbers, there will be eight random matches played first to decide the top 12 and the bottom 12 teams.

This will then allow a further nine weeks of round robin games followed by the last three games in a knockout format draw, he said.

“This will mean that teams will still get their 20 games each.”
