THE STAGE is set for the much anticipated Cook Islands Touch Association Boxing Day tournament on Monday at The Swamp in Avatiu.

The annual event, sponsored by Bluesky Cook Islands, will see 16 teams battling it out for the top honours in the mixed competition.

Initially, 20 teams were due to take part in the day-long tournament, but organisers cut it down by four to allow the competition to run more efficiently.

Cook Islands Touch Association vice-president and competition co-ordinator Simiona Teiotu said they were all geared for a grand opening to their season.

The 2016/17 Cook Islands Touch season will get underway next month.

“We want to ensure teams get enough time to rest in between their matches and that’s the reason for cutting the teams down to 16,” Teiotu said.

“There will be some social teams and some teams who are eyeing serious competition to prepare themselves for the upcoming season.”

Teiotu said teams which were yet to pay their registration fee would have to clear their dues before their games.

The registration fee is $120 with a nominated team referee. There is an additional $40 fee for those teams that do not provide a nominated referee.

“Bluesky has come on board this year to sponsor us for the next three years.

“We thank Philip Henderson, Bluesky country manager, and his team for this timely support.”

The telecommunication company yesterday presented in kind sponsorship worth about $5000.

The sponsorship include three trophies, two mobile phones worth close to $2000 for the most valuable players male and female, top up worth $2000 and uniforms for officials.

The tournament will kick off at 9.30am.
