The boys’ division showdown was a tough one between Apii Avarua and Apii Nikao. Both teams topped their pool, so it was bound to be good. Nikao started off with a promising attack when the Avarua defence turned the tide and set up a brilliant counter attack.
Nikao tried to defend, but Avarua forwards proved a handful and sneaked in with the goal. They held on to their slender lead to win the match.
The girls final saw Apii Arorangi battle it out with Apii Nikao in an epic final that was decided in penalties.
Both teams fought hard as the attack swayed from one end to another. Talented players on both sides broke through the defensive lines but were unable to get the crucial goal.
It was a scoreless game, so a penalty shootout was held to break the deadlock.
Both goalkeepers saved the first attempts at goal however Arorangi scored on in the second attempt while Nikao failed.
Arorangi blasted the ball past the opposition goalkeeper to go two up while the Nikao player’s shot was blocked.
Nikao managed to score in the fourth attempt and Arorangi sealed the win in their final attempt to claim the girl’s division. As the tournament was underway, development officers found it hard to pick out young stars for development purposes as many students showed some promise.Images on Page 11
