Julius David scored late in the 87th minute to settle the nerves and bank a much-deserved three points after both teams traded multiple blows in the clash for the top spot on the points table.
Tupapa Maraerenga started the day off hot on the attack and had early scoring opportunities. However, Geoffrey Strickland and Paavo Mustonen struggled to convert those chances into goals.
Nikao Sokattak made it 1-0 in the fifth minute, capitalising on a fast break as Mark Leito lobbed a pass to find Julius David, who scored the opener.
It was the home team who turned in the second scoring chance of the match in the eight minute through Toru Mateariki to extend the lead to 2-0.
Tupapa Maraerenga were awarded a penalty kick in the 26th minute after a Nikao Sokattak’s defender was penalised for a bad tackle in the box. Mustonen stepped up and cushioned the deficit to 1-2.
Tupapa Maraerenga leveled the score early in the second half through Grover Harmon after taking a headed pass from Sunai Joseph and powering a grounded shot into the net.
However Mark Leito ensured Nikao Sokattak take the lead after scoring in the 62nd minute to make it 3-2.
Nikao Sokattak were able to keep their energy up throughout the game and it was David who put the game beyond doubt in the 87th minute, driving a shot from outside the box into the top left corner of the net.
Celebration was in the air as Nikao Sokattak rejoiced over their much-deserved 4-2 win over Tupapa Maraerenga.
In the other premier men’s matches, Puaikura convincingly beat Avatiu 4-0 in their midweek clash whilst Titikaveka and Matavera were tied 1-1 at full time.
In the Islander senior women’s matches Avatiu, Tupapa Maraerenga and Titikaveka had convincing wins over their opponents in round five of the Rarotonga Football Competition.
