The Puaikura premier men’s team bounced back from their round one loss to beat Nikao Sokattak 3-0 on Saturday at the Nikao Sports field.

It was a good comeback from the side which lost to Tupapa Maraerenga 1-0 in the opening round of the Rarotonga Football competition.

Against Sokattak, Thomas Damon shone on the offensive end for Puaikura, scoring his first two goals this season, while fellow forward Pekay Edwards managed one goal. Edwards also provided an assist to Damon.

Sokattak started well in the match when Tahiri Elikana sent a pass down the right side and Samuel Koiatu worked into the box, but his shot went wide.

Julius David had a solid chance in the eighth minute, driving from the left side of the box and sending a shot which was well-read by the Puaikura goalkeeper.

Strong play just outside the box by Conroy Tiputoa led to the first goal of the game for Puaikura. Tiputoa was taken down by Nikao Sokattak’s defence for a free kick outside the box. Damon stepped up and powered a low shot into the bottom left corner of the net.

Pekay Edwards scored the second goal in the 36th minute after picking up a cross from Damon and slamming it into the back of the net.

Damon collected a loose ball near the halfway mark and drove a shot that went in over the goalkeeper’s head to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage heading into the break.

In the second half Nikao Sokattak was defensively stressed throughout the game. In a match in which both sides tried to maintain possession, Puaikura was able to hold the ball when it mattered, earning a 3-0 win

The win was timely for Puaikura in their chances to remain in the run for the title.

In the other Van’s premier men’s matches Avatiu and Titikaveka were locked 1-all, whilst Tupapa Maraerenga continued building on their winning momentum, putting away Matavera 3-0 earlier in the week.

In the Islander women’s division, Nikao Sokattak defeated Puaikura 5-1 and Tupapa Maraerenga recorded a 3-0 win against Matavera.
