The Cook Islands Football knock-out competition produced some fierce contests and mixed results over the weekend.

The crowd was well pleased with the soccer spectacle, as roars of joy and heartache alike were expressed on the day.

The Nikao Sokattak premier men’s team advanced to the semifinals and played without nerves on Saturday unleashing their unstoppable firepower to thrash Avatiu 7-1 at the Takitumu School grounds in Matavera.

Goals from Samuela Koiatu (4), Julius David (2) and Parau Ellis helped Nikao Sokattak trounce Avatiu.

In the early moments of the game, it was Avatiu who dominated possession and started the attack.

However they were not able to capitalise on the opportunities they created. The team was left backpedaling and weathered a spell of intense pressure from the Sokattak.

Julius David opened the scoring for the Sokattak with a well-placed finish in the 13th minute before Samuela Koiatu doubled the lead after Avatiu failed in their attempt to play a high defensive line.

Nikao Sokattak rarely looked threatened and deservedly increased their lead when Koiatu scored his second goal of the match 32 minutes into the game. Shortly after that, Parau Ellis added another close range shot on a Nathan Tisam assist.

In the second half, Avatiu’s hopes of victory were all but ended as Koiatu and David made the most of poor defending from Avatiu to put Nikao Sokattak seven goals up in the game.

In the other premier men’s matches, Takuvaine defeated 2-1, while Puaikura have also booked a spot in the semis after going into a penalty shootout with Titikaveka to break the 4-4 deadlock, winning 5-4.

In the senior women’s division, Tupapa Maraerenga, Titikaveka, Avatiu and Nikao Sokattak will be featuring in the next round, after their victories last weekend.
