The lagoon at Nikao in front of Vaiana’s was the setting for yesterday’s senior sprint competition.

With the sun shining and beautiful azure water, the scene was set for a fantastic day of fun along with, of course, some very serious sprint races.

A full tide ensured plenty of water under the canoes and competition was fierce.

On the start line the boys from St Josephs scout group did a great job in making sure the teams were lined up evenly for the starts.

The racing ran through preliminary heats and before the finals lined up the Kite-Sup team who had the whole beach roaring with laughter running their stand up paddle novelty races. So much laughter and a little cheating as well!

Progressing to the finals, all paddlers agreed that it was one of the best days of outrigger canoeing they had ever had. The exciting day had a perfect ending end with the prize giving and of course recovery beverages later yesterday.

The results were still being tallied when this edition went to print last night.
