The annual Netball in Paradise will wrap up today with the finals and prize giving at Arorangi courts.

Netball in Paradise has a record number of 32 teams battling it out in the annual event, played on four courts at Raemaru Park.

Netball Cook Islands vice-president Kopurei Anguna says the tournament has been awesome, “the tactical skills that have come through are great, people have prepared well.”

“It has been brilliant, more teams than ever before, we are now able to cater with the four courts, and it’s a lot easier.”

Coach of the New Zealand Police team Karen Scudder has brought a group of players over for the third year.

The Police group have eight new players from Wellington, Palmerston North, Waikato and Gisborne.

The team have not trained together prior to their arrival.

“We are here for the experience and get to know the local community. The location the people and the kids … the players look forward to visiting the schools, and love giving back,” Scudder said.

Apart from participating in the Netball in Paradise, the Police team also visited St Joseph’s Primary School.

School principal Shelley Berry said “we welcome the Police team at our school and it’s great for our girls to have good role models, and meeting these women through sport.”

Netball in Paradise started on Thursday last week. Arorangi netball courts witnessed some tough and exciting matches played in hot sunny conditions with a light drizzle slightly cooling players on Saturday.

The competition continued yesterday and will wrap today with the finals and tournament prize giving.
