IT’S all systems go for the inaugural Vaka of Origin cricket bash which starts on Saturday next week.

With just a week left to go, the organisers are all hyped up for the highly-anticipated battle between Sky Pacific Town XI and Varo Media Country XI which will be held at Raemaru Park at 10am.

The three-match ODI (one day invitational) series will feature the cream of the island’s 10 cricket clubs.

Cricketers from Avatiu/Nikao, Takuvaine, Tupapa 1, Tupapa 2 and Matavera make up the Town team while the Country team will consist of members from Turangi, Avana, Muri, Titikaveka and Arorangi.

Competition coordinator Matt Beasley said most of the preparations were done and they were looking forward to a grand start to the Vaka of Origin competition.

He said the contest would kick off with the national anthem and opening ceremony followed by the match at 10.30am.

The Vaka of Origin will be the first-ever competition to be played with the flashing zing bails in the Cook Islands, and will also have a boundary rope.

Beasley said they have a free admission to encourage families to come down and enjoy the festivities.

The event will also be filmed and replayed on CITV with announcements and commentary from principal of Te Uki Ou School, Brendon Fiebig.

DJ Kane will entertain the crowd between overs with music.

“A Sky dish will be set up on the sideline and if a player hits a six and hits the dish on the full, he will get $500 cash from Sky Pacific,” Beasley said.

Trader Jack’s food truck will be the event’s main caterer while the Arorangi clubhouse bar will be selling beverages.

“We are requesting supporters to dress up in support of their teams (town is blue and country is maroon). There is also a very special ceremony taking place at the innings break, the announcement will be made in Wednesday’s paper together with the final squad.”

Sponsor Grant Walker of Sky Pacific and Varo Media said they were hoping to finish the final touch ups this coming week.

“If the attendance and response to this event is hugely positive, we would consider offering the same style of tournament for the women next year.”

The second match on June 18 with the final battle scheduled for June 25.
