Opinion: All we’re saying is, give peas a chance

I think seared tuna is a God-given miracle. I love a pork stir-fry. And there’s still something comforting about an old-fashioned roast chicken on a cold night.

But when my son was 6 years old he put down his fork, halfway through the roast I’d cooked, and announced he didn’t want to eat animals any more.

Today we tell the story of Stella Marsters, a local who doesn’t eat meat – and she says that may be the answer to the country’s obesity epidemic.

Certainly, it will help. But I also can’t help wondering if in 20 or 30 years, as the impact of intensive agriculture on the world’s environment becomes unsustainable, if we’ll all have to consider quitting meat.

The day is coming when eating meat may be as socially unacceptable as smoking.
