Editorial: Giving back when you give gifts

The flood sales and so-called Black Friday are behind us; Christmas and Boxing Day and New Year’s sales lie ahead.

As the festive season starts to gain momentum, it’s tempting to get frustrated at this stream of American-influenced sales – but spare a thought for the retailers who are forced to play this game.

Our stores are not international chains and franchises; they are locally-owned businesses that are deeply involved in the community.

They shouldn’t have to fight for our business, to fight for our loyalty – look at the names of the sponsors of every community event and it’s clear the hard yards they’ve invested to earn our trust.

So perhaps, this Christmas, instead of ordering prezzies from overseas online retailers, we think about supporting our local stores.
