Deputy prime minister Mark Brown will head to the northern group this Thursday to round up consultation on the seabed mineral exploration plans.

Manihiki and Rakahanga are the islands which will be visited by the team from Rarotonga on this trip.

In December last year, Brown, who is also the minerals and natural resources minister, led a team which included Infrastructure minister Robert Tapaitau and MP Tingika Elikana and held public consultations on Tongareva (Penrhyn) and Pukapuka.

“The response from our people has been overwhelmingly positive in terms of support for this first step we are looking to take, which is the exploration phase of our seabed minerals,” Brown earlier said.

“We were able to explain to people what that exactly entails in terms of its low impact and in terms of the environment.”

Ngapotoru and Aitutaki are the only other islands left to consult on the seabed minerals exploration project.
