Emergency medical flight from Atiu

The Health ministry has confirmed there was an emergency medical flight from Atiu to Rarotonga on Thursday of last week.

Without disclosing patient information, acting secretary Roana Mataitini said the patient was currently being managed by Rarotonga medical consultants.

She said all patients referrals from the outer islands were done according to clinical guidelines and the ministry’s patient referral policy.

“The accepting officer from Rarotonga has extensive consultations with the officers in charge on each island, who (then) make the decision to refer patients to Rarotonga,” Mataitini said.

“The call to make a chartered flight is (made) after the management plan for patient has been carried out and no change has come about in the patient.”

The total patient referral budget for 2017/18 is $550,000 and Mataitini said the figure included all emergency health charters.
