The Atiu Rarotonga Community has set a target of collecting $50,000 from the Atiu Gala Day which will be held this Friday.

The day-long event, to be held at the Atiu Hostel in Tupapa Maraerenga, will start at 7am and run till late in the evening.

Previously called “Atiu Day”, the event will be used to raise funds for the Atiu Sydney Community for a hall building project in Australia.

The hall will accommodate members from the Atiu community visiting Sydney in the future.

Nga Teao-Papatua, the secretary of Atiu Rarotonga Community, said the resolution to help the Atiu Sydney Community was made at the Atiu Island Trust Conference.

“The Atiu Sydney Community submitted a proposal and now it’s time for us to walk the talk,” she said.

“The hall they are proposing to build will help accommodate the Atiu groups visiting Sydney from Rarotonga, Atiu and New Zealand, so this fundraiser is for a good cause.”

The gala day will kick off with the pancake breakfast to the sounds of a live band.

There will be a variety of food on offer including umu food, barbecues, seafood and more, as well as a wide range of desserts.

Teao-Papatua said they were hoping to set up more than 10 stalls for the gala day.

They were also liaising with the Ministry of Cultural Development and the neighbouring hostels for a convenient parking spot to ease traffic flow around the area.

“We are also planning to set up mobile tables and seating places for people to enjoy their meals. They can buy their food from the hall and have it outside while enjoying the entertainment which will run throughout the day.

“All meals will be $10 per plate.”

Teao-Papatua is calling on the Atiu community in Rarotonga to come forward and help them with the fundraiser.

“We are also asking the whole of Rarotonga to come over on Friday and help us with this fundraiser. There will be something delicious for everyone to enjoy on the day.”

Anyone interested in helping out with meat supplies and other donations should contact Teao-Papatua on 23460 or 53467.
