After seven years of picking up and putting down tools, the people of Atiu are set to finally have a place to call home on Rarotonga with the opening of their hostel next month.

Atiu Rarotonga community secretary Nga Teao-Papatua can barely contain her excitement for the official opening of the hostel in Tupapa which will see Atiuans celebrate on December 19.

Teao-Papatua is calling on the Atiu community of Rarotonga to attend a public meeting at the new hostel tonight to discuss the preparations for the opening event.

Due to a number of funding challenges the hostel construction has been stalled a number of times since it began in 2008.

Finishing touches to the building are now taking place and landscaping of the surrounding area is set to begin soon.

The project has meant a lot of volunteer work from the community. Teao-Papatua said men had been devoting their weekends to making progress on the building, while mamas had catered for the workers.

An Utu-Anga for the hostel will also be held on December 12.

All those who want to be involved in the hostel opening are encouraged to attend the public meeting tonight at the Atiu Hostel in Tupapa next to the National Auditorium at 4.30pm.
