Covid-19 has been a blessing in disguise as far as allowing infrastructure projects to be completed around Rarotonga with little disruption.
The $3.6 million Avatiu Bridge upgrade, with work being undertaken by Landholdings, is one of the bigger projects that began in March and is now in the final stages of reconstruction.
An area prone to severe flooding for many decades, where businesses and homes have been washed out, MP Albert Nicholas said a replacement bridge was vital to fix the problem once and for all.
“The project is a necessity not just for my district but for the nation as it’s a direct link to our national port,” he said.
For much of the time that the reconstruction work has been taking place, the main road over the bridge has been reduced to one lane with detours in place for motorists.
