Tighter rules for bars and licensed clubs

Bars and clubs hope for a decision this afternoon to allow them to reopen.

Officials from health ministry Te Marae Ora are to meet to confirm the rules. Licensed restaurants and cafes are open, but clubs and nightclubs operate under a different licence.

The Liquor Licensing Authority is overseen by Secretary of Transport John Hosking, who signalled tighter controls on bars and clubs. “There are changes that will be made,” he said.

“We will also have to visit every single premises, and with Te Marae Ora, make the recommendations.”

The Bowling Club has kept busy with maintenance and is open for members to play friendly games, as long as they keep their distance, said manager Wendy Mani.

And at Rarotonga Golf Club, players are welcome for a round from 8am to 4pm.
