Ash Wednesday falls on the first day of Lent and is celebrated by all Christians around the world especially Catholics to mark the holy day of prayer, fasting and repentance.
It is the six weeks of penitence before Easter.
Bishop Paul Donoghue informed the students that the palm branches blessed on Palm Sunday of the previous year are burned to create the ashes. This is then applied to one’s forehead.
The bishop said God wants to see his own image in everyone’s lives.
“Set your mind on something that will make you more like Christ,” he said.
