Thursday’s State funeral for much-loved traditional leader the late Dame Margaret Karika Ariki was a huge occasion, befitting her special status as a Cook Islands icon.

The funeral procession, which travelled from Karika Palace along the main road and down to the National Auditorium, saw crowds of onlookers lining to pay their respects. And at 12 points along the way, the teams of pallbearers changed to involve many from the community and the numerous organisations who Dame Margaret 98, championed during her long lifetime.

CINews was there to record the historic occasion and pictures on this page were taken by CINews photojournalist Chris Taylor.
