Luxury yacht too tall for our wharf

A luxury yacht which moored beyond the reef, off Avatiu over the weekend was unable to enter the harbour because at 64 metres, its mast is much too high.

The vessel will instead have to remain outside the harbour to avoid possible hazards and to comply with Cook Islands aviation rules controlling low-flying aircraft.

The 46m yacht Skade was built by Holland Jachtbouw in the Netherlands at the Zaandam shipyard, and was delivered to her owner in 2016.

She is visiting on a private charter and is carrying six people, including the captain and crew.

However, the yacht can accommodate up to eight guests in four cabins, as well as up to six crew.

Featuring an upmarket interior design, the vessel apparently includes luxury amenities such as air conditioning, a swimming platform and a “garage” for a tender.

Before sailing to Rarotonga, Skade was moored in Tahiti. The vessel is scheduled to leave for Niue this Monday.
