Private discussions on maritime security between police, government, and visiting representatives of the Australian Government’s Department of Defence were held yesterday.

Australian Defence Advisor Captain Stephanie Moles with the Royal Australian Navy and Canberra-based Cook Islands Policy Advisor Peita Spence travelled to Rarotonga to participate in the discussions.
In an interview held earlier in the week, Moles said Australia and the Cook Islands share similar perspectives on regional security issues and that both countries can work together to maintain “stability and prosperity” in the South Pacific.
In efforts to boost monitoring in the region – including the Cook Islands exclusive economic zone - she said a new aerial surveillance programme will begin to be deployed out of Samoa next month on a trial basis.
Moles also discussed the ongoing refit of police patrol boat Te Kukupa, scheduled for completion next March.
She said the work – currently underway in Cairns – will extend the vessel’s life by 7.5 years, in time for scheduled replacement by a new vessel as part of the Australian government’s recently revamped Pacific police patrol boat programme.
The new vessel will be roughly the same size as Te Kukupa, but with greater fuel efficiency.
Based out of the Australian High Commission in Wellington, Moles is at the end of her three-year term and will be replaced in January by a new advisor.
She said she will be returning to Canberra for a new role.
