Fighting breast cancer

IN a bid to raise awareness of breast cancer, the Cook Islands Breast Cancer Foundation (CIBCF) will provide a free screening programme in July.

The initiative is a move to fight cancer and inform women about the importance of being screened.

The programme will be conducted at the Rarotonga Hospital.

According to Ministry of Health statistics, cancer is the third main cause of death in the Cook Islands after cardiovascular disease (heart attack and stroke) and diabetes.

The ministry says more awareness is needed to fight cancer and related diseases.

“We are encouraging women if they feel a lump or something unusual in their breast, to please go to the nearest health centre and go get yourself screened,” a ministry statement said.

A ministry representative said they would continue to provide advice, but the onus was on individuals make sure they were screened.
