Movember organisers are calling for the men of the Cook Islands to once again become “Mo’bros” and join in the fight again prostate cancer in the Cook Islands.

The Movember stall will be set up next to the main stage at Punanga Nui Market between 9am-12pm this Saturday, October 31. A “shave station” will be on hand to get the Mo’bros ready for the official beginning of Movember on November 1.

A registration fee of $20 will be required by all Mo’bros this year and men are encouraged to also raise further funds from their family, friends, work and sports teams to help raise awareness about prostate cancer. The first 100 Mo’bros who register receive a free Movember Kuki Airani t-shirt.

Prostate cancer is a growing issue throughout the Pacific, including the Cook Islands. One in nine of Cook Islands men over 70 are affected by the disease and one in six men over 76 are affected. That’s not to say it’s an older man’s problem alone. In the Cook Islands, men over the age of 40 are encouraged to get their prostate checked and Movember aims to get more men to understand the importance of early detection of this disease- it can save your life.

Movember will run throughout the month of November where registered Mobros will grow a moustache to draw attention to the issue of prostate cancer among their families, friends, team mates and colleagues.

Their aim will be to spread awareness and raise funds that will be donated by Movember to the Cook Islands Prostate Cancer Foundation. The rules however, state that you must be clean shaven to begin growing on November 01 so Movember will have a shaving station set up at the Punanga Nui (right by the main stage) where our Mobros can register and shave off ready to join the campaign.

Last year saw many high profile local men sporting unlikely facial hair to support the cause including Minister of Finance Mark Brown, and league star Kevin Iro. Local photographer Ronnie Siulepa even joined in the fun, shaving off his beloved moustache for the first time in his life in preparation for Movember.

All funds raised will be donated to the Cook Islands Prostate Cancer Foundation. For more info, visit www.movembercookislands.com
