The Adaptation Fund Cook Islands programme – aimed at strengthening national and local capacity for monitoring and decision making to reduce risks associated with climate change - launched its first outreach in Aitutaki last month.

The programme, known as the “Pa Enua Action Resilient Livelihoods” (PEARL) under Climate Change Cook Islands, involved projects in Aitutaki, meeting with Aitutaki stakeholders, Mayor and Island Council leaders, youth, farmers, women’s groups and scoping of potential PEARL projects.

The Office of the Prime Minister’s Division, Climate Change Cook Islands, National Implementing Agency Development Cook Islands, Ministry of Infrastructure Cook Islands and Ministry of Agriculture Cook Islands partnered in this outreach. Climate Change Cook Islands stated that the objective of the programme was to build and implement an integrated approach to further increase the adaptive capacity of remote island communities and ecosystems to disaster risk and climate change impacts.

The programme also looked at strengthening national and local capacity for monitoring and decision making to respond and to reduce risks associated with climate change and establishing climate resilient water management instruments using integrated and community based approach.

It also looked at raising awareness and established a knowledge exchange platform to increase adaptive capacity to revitalise agriculture production systems.

The visit to Aitutaki also involved scoping and climate change awareness and integrated water security management planning and implementation.

During the Aitutaki Outreach PEARL Component three co-ordinator and Director of Policy for the Ministry of Agriculture Cook Islands Takili Tairi conducted a workshop and awareness programme with farmers in Aitutaki.
