Friendly Vasco Da Gama cruise passengers Peter and Irena Macielinski were delighted to pose for a photo with Kia Orana Ambassador Aunty Nane on dry land yesterday.

They said Rarotonga was as lovely and lush as they had imagined.

The Macielinski both migrated from Poland to Britain 75 years ago, as child refugees in World War II.  Poland was set upon from both east and west in the war, but since then their family have been peacebrokers: one son is married to a German, one to a Russian.

Sick and tired of seeing only the insides of flash hotels, Irena was pleased to discover “how lovely local people are, to meet and chat with” by comparison to other countries.

About 800 passengers came ashore. Cook Islands Tourism’s Metua Vaiimene said such visits were a small but important part of the tourism industry.
