This month, a massive celebration was being organised at the Palace of Pa Ariki in Rarotonga to mark the 30th anniversary of her coronation.
However, because of Covid-19 and the country’s borders being closed, Pa Ariki was unable to travel back from New Zealand to her home island.
The formal event will now take place today at midday (NZ time) in Mangere Bridge, Auckland, at the Takitumu Hall.
Hundreds of people are expected to attend including representatives on behalf of Cook Islands Government and the New Zealand Government as well as other dignitaries.
Warriors and the New Zealand Maori Takitumu delegation will assemble at the paata, entrance gate at 11.45am.
At noon Pa Ariki will be escorted to the paata by Iro Rangatira, Rautea Rangatira and Pikiaere Mataiapo.
The anniversary will bring together a number of commemorative cultural and religious activities led her Mataiapo, Ui Rangatira, leaders, family and friends of Pa Ariki.
The day will begin with welcome speeches to guests by Orometua Nio Mare, George Terekia and Reverend Bill Cuthers.
Following a flag raising ceremony, Pa Ariki and VIP guests will be escorted inside the hall and seated for speeches and other formalities including a church service, the cutting of the anniversary cake and kaikai.
Paramount Chief Pa Ariki is a title 47 others have held and is of huge significance to Takitumu Vaka and the House of Ariki, but also unites links to New Zealand Maori via Takitimu.
