People meander through store aisles still undecided on what gifts to purchase, cafés and food outlet seats are taken up with grateful shoppers wanting to rest their weary feet; and motorists compete, persistently for parking spaces.
There’s plenty of festive activity going on, too. On Monday night, the Hospital Comforts team delivered festive cheer to patients with joyous Christmas carols, and cake. They were accompanied by Santa and were supported by the Girls Brigade and Girl Guides.
The island’s loyal Tropical Santa for more than 10 years CITC’s George, will visit businesses on Saturday morning, heading from the lagoon side of CITC Liquor towards town from 9.15am.
Santa and his elf are scheduled to arrive at the Punanga Nui Market at 10.15am and parents are welcome to bring their children along for a photo.
Aitutaki has joined in the Christmas spirit, with their Christmas in Park event held yesterday afternoon. George said he was pleased the island continued to celebrate the occasion for the children to experience.
Since 2011, the Tropical Christmas committee, made up of Rarotonga businesses, have banded together to inject extra joy and sparkle into the festive season.

Tropical Christmas: Tomorrow Thursday December 19th – CITC Avarua is open to 6pm with sales including all Ladies Fashion Clothing and Men’s Fashion Clothing 25% off, CIPS Electronics is open to 7pm with specials, as is Raro Mart until 7pm. Friday 20th – ANZ Blue Day/Rarotonga Brewery special have 4 litre flagon refills at $20 and are open 10am to 6pm. Saturday 21st – Santa and Elfie at the Market from 10.15am for photos. Tuesday 24th – Vonnia’s special Christmas Draw to win $4,000.
