The remaining Team Cook Islands athletes and officials at the Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands, were unable to board their scheduled flight on Sunday due to an “oversold” situation.

A sports federation official told Cook Islands News, “We didn’t manage to get on our scheduled flight yesterday (Sunday) as the flight was oversold.”

The athletes were rescheduled to depart Honiara yesterday.

Cook Islands News yesterday contacted Team Cook Islands chef de mission Mark Short and Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee (CISNOC) secretary general Owen Lewis for comment.

Last night, Short replied: “Those 13 members of Team Cook Islands that were not able to leave yesterday (Sunday) for what appears to be a double-booking problem by the airlines has been fixed and they have just departed this (yesterday) afternoon.”

“I am pretty much the last person to leave and will be departing tomorrow (today).

“The focus is to get out now while I can as there appears to be a cyclone developing near here including around PNG that could affect travel.”

Team Cook Islands concluded their Pacific Games campaign with a total of five gold, three silver, and 10 bronze medals.
