The BCI National Youth Athletics Championships is on today at the BCI stadium and this time with Pa Enua involvement.

The president of Athletics Cook Islands, Simone Fe’ao, said there would be 120 athletes competing aged between 13 to 18 years.

Fe’ao said the weather for today was forecast to be good and there was a number of volunteers helping out.

“The big win for us is getting our Pa Enua athletes involved – Covid sort of disrupted that,” she said.

Fe’ao said a few records were broken last year and she thought more could be broken today.

With the Cook Islands Games on the horizon, more people were “gearing up” for this year’s event, she said.

Fe’ao said quite a few of the athletes were trying out new events that they had not done in the past.

After the youth event, it will be the primary schools’ turn with the CITC Prince of Wales Primary School Athletics Championships on September 13 and 14.

The event will have around 300 athletes competing. Fe’ao said each school was in preparation mode, but more volunteers were needed.
