Scammers target Cook Islands with climate change proposals

Scammers are targeting the Cook Islands with climate change proposals.

In a written statement, Prime Minister Mark Brown warned potential investors to be wary of invitations to invest in climate change proposals in the Cook Islands after banking officials identified “one very credible looking prospectus” as a scam.

A reputable New Zealand based bank uncovered the scam, alerted Cook Islands authorities, and a sum of $100,000 about to be invested was blocked, Brown said.

“I am disappointed that the Cook Islands genuine and legitimate efforts to convert the country to using 100 per cent sustainable and reusable energy, is being targeted by crooks as a potential way of stealing from investors.

“Fortunately banking authorities have unearthed and stopped this particular attempt.

“The document being circulated to attract investment looks very credible and professionally prepared.

“It reads well, but it’s a scam.

“People should check, and check again, before parting with their hard-earned cash.”
