Maritime Cook Islands has given a “cancellation notice” to a Cook Islands-flagged general cargo ship which has been barred from European ports for failing to turn up at a repair yard after a safety inspection.

The Paris MOU on Port State Control said the 6100-dwt Balkan 1 (built 2011) was detained in the port of Oristani in Sardina Italy on June 6 and left 11 days later, according to Trade Winds Global Shipping News.

Maritime Cook Islands co-chief executive officer Moeroa Mamanu-Matheson said the vessel has been detained twice this year and following the recent detention, a Cancellation Notice has been issued.

Mamanu-Matheson said that they have no information on the type of cargo it carried.

According to Baltics Shipping, Balkan 1 is a general cargo vessel built in 2011 by Huaxia Shipping Business in Wuhan, China. Its gross tonnage is 4878 tons.
