Motorist ‘very shocked’ following golf ball incident on Rarotonga

A motorist had a frightening experience when her windscreen was smashed by a flying golf ball in the vicinity of the Rarotonga Golf Club in Nikao.

The mother of two took to social media saying she was grateful her children were not in the car with her when it happened.

“To all golfers, that is, please be mindful when playing golf, in which direction you’re hitting your ball,” she posted on the Rarotonga-Community and Beyond Facebook page.

“Myself, a mother of two was on my way to work Friday afternoon, out of the blue, at the Social Centre, a golf ball had hit my windscreen; thankfully I was alone and no accidents; but was shocked, very shocked.

“I'm so very grateful my children were not in the car with me and that a lady had walked up to me, taking down her details for this matter, and to friends that stopped by to see if I was okay.”

Stuart Henry of the Rarotonga Golf Club said he was aware of the incident and the executive committee were due to discuss it at last night’s monthly meeting.

“This subject will be on the agenda, otherwise I have no comments at this time.”

Police spokesman Trevor Pitt said the incident had not been reported to Police.

“I’ve heard this has happened on occasion in the past, including some near misses; part of the road environment since the course is adjacent to the main road,” Pitt said.

“I'm sure the club does issue the appropriate advice to exercise care on the course.

“There would be an issue should there be any malicious intent involved.

“So it would pay to have timely words of caution conveyed to golfers.”
