Alleged driver remanded

The alleged motorbike driver involved in the weekend’s fatal crash has been remanded into custody until June 22.

Jonathan Elisa, who appeared before Justice of the Peace Nadine Newnham in the Criminal Court yesterday, is facing two charges including dangerous driving causing death.

Elisa, 25, is the survivor of Saturday’s motorbike crash in Titikaveka that resulted in the death of a 24-year-old man.

Police prosecutor senior sergeant Fairoa Tararo requested that the defendant be remanded into custody for a week due to the seriousness of the charge and for the defendant’s own safety.

He said a bail application can be applied by the defendant’s counsel next week.

Tararo said that the defendant was at risk, his safety was uncertain and the police were still investigating the matter.

In the courtroom, a family member of the deceased stood to address the court on behalf of their family. He said the accused meant a lot to his family and “what had happened, has happened”. He said his family supports the accused and they are going through a lot.

“We here to support him.”

JP Newnham advised the person that he was not allowed to address the court.

She said Elisa had a history of traffic offences, and for his safety he has been remanded into custody until June 22.
