Drink driving accused ‘out of control’, says lawyer

A man who has entered guilty pleas to multiple drink driving offences has been described by his lawyer as “out of control”.

Tutai Junior Amiri appeared in the Criminal Court on Thursday on two charges of excess breath alcohol and two of contempt of court.

“I’ve never seen a defendant counsel so harassed by someone who keeps offending,” Norman George said.

“I’m not happy with him calling me on weekends with this drinking; his drinking is out of control.”

George asked that the matter be adjourned to see how the sentence could be approached.

George said his client was hoping to get a job in New Zealand, but there was continuing frustration.

“I want to arrest myself; I also want to serve notice on him.”

The court heard Amiri had already entered a guilty plea to one of the excess breath alcohol charges but not to three of the latest charges.

A new charge had been filed on Wednesday.

George entered guilty pleas to all the charges and the matter was adjourned to June 1.

Amiri was told not to consume alcohol.
