Assault accused gets bail with strict conditions

Despite facing multiple assault charges, an accused held in custody was granted bail with strict conditions including curfew, contact restrictions, and passport surrender.

Judge Romeo Nee Nee, facing four charges of assaulting a female, single charges of breaching a protection order, assault with intent to injure and unlawful detainment, was granted bail last week.

Suppression orders were put in place when he appeared in the Criminal Court at Avarua on Friday.

Justice of the Peace Vania Kenning, in granting bail, said it came with strict conditions, and that Nee Nee, 25, needed to make sure he abided by them.

He was not to visit the alleged victim’s residential or work address, and any arrangement for childcare was to be handled through his parents.

Nee Nee was given a curfew between 7pm and 3.50am, and told not to offer violence.

He was also told to surrender his passport to the High Court, and not to leave the Cook Islands without prior approval of the High Court.

The matter was adjourned to March 1.
