Cook Islands Chamber of Commerce says, given the number of businesses being targeted by criminals in the past 12 months, street cameras are something that must be considered.

Chamber of Commerce chair Addrienne Hosking-Tinirau says businesses would be wise to review all security in their operations.

Hosking-Tinirau said security includes cameras, security of premises, access to assets and information, and cyber security.

She made the comment in relation to the recent break-in at the Goldmine Jewellery store and TEM Store in Muri.

Hosking-Tinirau explained that staff, particularly in retail situations, should be trained to identify people who enter the premises, that look out of place, and do not seem to have a genuine reason for being there, and be given the opportunity to report to management.

Asked if CCTV cameras should now be installed in the town area (Avarua)/ clubs / cinema area as a way to protect business as well as the people, or if it should be considered, she said:

“With several businesses being targeted in the past year, perhaps it is time for street cameras to be installed in key areas.”

She further advised businesses that if insurance companies give a pricing benefit to businesses who put robust security measures in place to mitigate the chance of break-ins, then that is a good incentive to review as well.

Last week Cook Islands Police said that CCTV security cameras are now a standard requirement in this day and age.

Following a recent spate of break-ins, police media officer Trevor Pitt said outlets trading in high value stock and accommodation, must have cameras and sensor lighting as a priority.

Meanwhile, investigations into the break-in at the Goldmine jewellery shop in Avarua, where amber jewellery, gold chains, and bracelets were stolen, occurred in the early hours of the January 1 continues, police said.
