The Tupapa Panthers premier side is all set to finish the preliminary round unbeaten after bagging another win in the domestic rugby league competition on Friday

The rampaging Tupapa Panthers extended their lead in the Raro Cars Rugby League Competition after recording another big win. The Darren Piri-coached side thumped Aitutaki Sharks 72-14 at Victoria Park in Tupapa yesterday.

With a match remaining before the knockouts starting in a fortnight’s time, the Panthers look all set to finish the preliminary round unbeaten and on top of the five-team points table.

Coach Piri is not counting their chickens before they hatch but remains optimistic of finishing the preliminary round of the competition on a high.

“Big wins like this gives us confidence but there is still plenty work that needs to be done to play league at the level we want,” Piri said.

“Its good to have those wins but our real test will be next week when we play the Eels.”

The Panthers beat the Avatiu Nikao Eels, who are placed second, in the opening round.

Meanwhile the Eels will take on the struggling defending champions Ngatangiia Matavera Sea Eagles in the lone premier match this afternoon at Nukupure Park. The Sea Eagles need to win this match at any cost in order to stand any chance of finishing in the top four.

The Clive Nicholas-coached Eels will be hoping to claim maximum points from this match to maintain their second spot in the standings.
