The Cook Islands men’s and women’s triples and pairs teams have ended their Delhi Commonwealth Games campaign and will put all their efforts into supporting their teammates in the singles division.

The four teams were unable to make the cut for the top four placing in their section to move on to the quarterfinals and playoffs.

But they’ve been dubbed ‘giant killers’ around the Jawaharlal bowling greens for some outstanding play, which have seen them beat some of the big names of teams bowling.

But the rare wins have not been enough to secure a top four placing and continuation in the competition.

But there’s still plenty to cheer about in the bowling camp as singles players Peter Toto and Irene Tupuna began their campaign at the weekend.

Toto was the first to roll up on Friday night against a young opponent from Jersey.

Papa Toto won the first end 8-7 but his young opponent stole the second 7-6 forcing a tie breaker which he won 0-4.

Papa Toto faced his second opponent on Saturday against Malta and this time he bowled well to win in a tight tie breaker.

Toto lost the first end to Malta 10-4 before winning the second 12-6 and going on to win the tie breaker 3-2.

Mama bowler Irene Tupuna, on the other hand, had a tough day on the green with three games in a row.

Tupuna was unable to record a win going down to Zambia 5-7 and 5-10.

She played a better second match against Australia and after coming back from a 0-13 loss in the first end with a 7-6 win in the second – lost the tie breaker 1-2.

Her final match of the day was against tough Welsh opponent who cleaned up 14-3 and 13-4.

The singles round robin will continue until Tuesday and the team still awaits their ranking as playoffs in the men’s and women’s pairs and triples divisions are yet to be played.
