Tomorrow (Saturday) is the final round of the 2010 Palm Grove Golf Tournament and, in just about all divisions, the winners are impossible to predict.

With a packed course over the last two weeks for this ever-popular event, there have been some great scores in evidence.

In the senior men’s division, James Herman extended his lead over Ned Howard by 1 stroke but Sonny Karati closed the gap.

Maara Kenning also extended her lead by one stroke over Margaret Taio to maintain first place in the senior ladies’ division.

The real improver, however, was Campbell Hocking, in the junior A men’s division, with an almost flawless 73 off the stick – and this off an 18 handicap!

You could see the gleam of excitement in the handicapper’s eye.

Tom J Marsters just about sewed things up in the vet’s division by coming in with a 66 off the stick.

If he seriously oversleeps this Saturday and doesn’t wake up until about 5pm, then some of the others are in with a real chance.

The leaders, with their totals so far, in each division going into the final round this Saturday are: senior men – James Herman (142), Ned Howard (146), Sonny Karati (147), senior ladies – Maara Kenning (160), Margaret Taio (163), Tuaine Marsters (165), intermediate men – Bruce Manuela (158), Henry R Henry (159), Paara Pitomaki and Karika Karika Jnr (both on 160), intermediate ladies – Tai Raina (180), Jackie Urlich (181), junior A men – Campbell Hocking (163), Jackson Enua and Tuwunga Marukore (both on 172), junior ladies – Bernie Raffe (192), Sharon McGeown (192), Mii Tangitamaiti (196), junior B men – Vae Unuka (179), Junior Ngatokorua (180), vets – Tom J Marsters (136), Riiti Mamanu (152).

The course was playing really well last week, thanks to Sonny and his team.

In fact, it was playing so well that anyone coming in with less than +6 in the bogey sweep for the day had no chance of winning a prize.

The draw for this Saturday is on the notice board and the top contenders have been seeded so make sure you know what time you are teeing off.

Also remember to stay around after the game to be in the draw for a $100 voucher, courtesy of Palm Grove – you have to be present when it is drawn in order to win.

Meitaki Maata to Betsy Eisler of Palm Grove for her generous support and sponsorship once again this year.

We look forward to seeing you back on the course again as soon as the little one lets you.

Saturday July 3 is another famous tournament, The Michigan Motors Shootout, where each of the top players play against all the other top players at once.

This is held in the morning and there will be a shotgun start for us lesser mortals in the afternoon.

Come along in the morning and cheer on your favourite player.

The week after that there is the Peter Fletcher Memorial Tournament, which is also a fun day enjoyed by everyone in Peter’s memory.

As usual, good luck to all golfers, especially those trying for a place in the Palm Grove Tournament.
