Tennis fundraiser a big hit

Saturday’s junior tennis fundraiser at the Nikao tennis courts was a great success thanks to the sunshine and support from the tennis community.

The fundraiser tournament attracted around 20 eager tennis players and many more were attracted by the delicious food for sale.

A team of 16 junior players will be heading to two tournaments in New Zealand next month – the Coca Cola tennis tournament in Hamilton and the annual Auckland Christmas tournament.

The 16 local tennis players will be accompanied by a group of five parents and about three other Cook Islands tennis players based in New Zealand.

Those that took to the courts certainly provided plenty of action for the spectators who preferred to munch on chocolate cake and ice cream and cheer from the sidelines.

The exhibition match between one of the island’s rising tennis stars, Roland Neururer Jnr, and Pacific Mini Games representative, Sam Tangaroa, was a tight battle showcasing the Cook Islands’ best tennis talents.

The New Zealand tournament will ensure junior tennis players continue to develop and grow in the sport and one day represent the Cook Islands at international level.
