Talent to the fore among juniors

There’s certainly no shortage of netball talent on Rarotonga as proven by exciting games in the under 15 and junior open divisions at the Telecom Sports Arena on Saturday.

Cook Islands Netball Association is banking on players in the under 15 and junior open grades to make up the national squad in a few years time.

But while there’s certainly plenty of talent and skill on court – intensity and drive seem to be lacking.

A great game was developing on court when the Tupapa junior open grade faced a confident looking Avatiu squad.

And while Avatiu were leading early on with some great shooting from Tu Te Maeva Poaru – the Avatiu side lacked commitment and drive.

Tupapa on the other hand were passionate and determined as they trailed behind Avatiu early on.

Tupapa centre Teiti Tupuna was a delight to watch as she sprung into the air to intercept lobs and hit the deck to wrestle for loose balls.

And it was this determination by Tupapa that saw them win the match 33-30 over a talented but lacklustre Avatiu team.

Plenty of action was seen in the junior open grade match between Takuvaine and Arorangi with Takuvaine edging out Arorangi 32-25.

A sharp looking Titikaveka junior open grade unfortunately had no opponent to play and they tried to enjoy their match against a throw together team made up of their own players and others.

The Titikaveka premier grade also had to play a ‘fun’ game against the men’s team that have stepped in to fill in the gap left by the fact that there is no Ngatangiia premier grade team.

In the premier grade the men’s team beat Titikaveka in the friendly 40-22 while Arorangi edged out Takuvaine 43-36.

Avatiu were knocked off their pedestal when Tupapa snatched a great win 60-52.
