The Vonnia’s Corporate mixed 6 on 6 volleyball tournament spiked off to a fantastic start on Friday with 24 teams taking to the courts at the Telecom Sports Arena.

Before teams could show off their skills, CISNOC secretary general Rosie Blake, Vonnia’s representative Olivia Heather and Cook Islands Volleyball Association vice president and champion beach volleyball player Brendon Heath all had the honour of serving the first ball on each of the three volleyball courts.

Then it was action time and with three games running at the same time, the Telecom Sports Arena came to life with action galore.

Although this is a social league, there were some highly competitive competition seen and of course lots of fun antics by those teams just looking at socialising.

Players ranged in size, skills and age – but all thoroughly enjoyed the first round of the tournament.

Games were played in 25 minute halves producing some outstanding scores and rallies.

The CITC team Smackdowns scored a massive 109 points against the RMD Spikers who reached a credible 50 points.

The longest rally of the competition came via the clash of the banks when team BCI Be Cool Like Ice team faced the No Pacz from Westpac Bank.

And after round one of games the CITC Smackdowns is leading the competition with Te Vara Nui hot on their heads in second play and Be Cool as Ice and Turtles Fani Totoys share third place.

Players are asked to be on time for games and come wearing proper sports gear. This Friday’s round two draw will be published in Cook Islands News on Friday.
