The Rarotonga Golf Club golf season has come to an end for another year. The final event on the club calendar was the finals of the Club Stroke Championships.

This was a gruelling event on the last day with all divisions apart from the vets playing 36 holes.

Some finalists were able to set up a commanding lead after 18 holes and just had to hold it together to be victorious. Other games went right down to the wire with the lead changing several times and there were some good fight-backs.

In the end Royle Brogan held off Ned Howard to become the 2010 Senior Men’s Club Champion, while young Rotana Howard was too strong for Cook Islands representative Maara Kenning and is now the Ladies Senior Club Champion. Rotana plays most of her golf in NZ now and has really improved to be a top player.

In the other divisions, Pokoina Matara is the Intermediate Division Champion after defeating Eddie Tuaati, Intermediate Ladies Champion is Donnie Willis ahead of Mereana Hagai, Junior A Men’s champion is Junior Ngatokoroa ahead of Phil ‘Ipa’ Urlich, Vae Unuka is Junior B Men’s Champion ahead of Pomare Pokipoki, and in the Junior Ladies’ Division Jackie Urlich won over Rita Howard.

In the Vet’s Division, Peter McKinley defeated Taiora Henry over 18 holes to be the victor. Peter followed this up the following week by becoming one of the rare golfers to play his age. Peter carded a great 73 off the stick. Congratulations ‘PJ’.

Congratulations go to all the winners and to all the players who reached the finals.

The ever-popular Business House golf starts this week and all teams should be registered and have their teams organised.

This Saturday the course will be crowded for the annual Rotary Club Ambrose. There will be plenty of good prizes up for grabs so come along and support this worthy cause. If you haven’t registered a team yet, give the golf club a call and put your entry in. Thank you to all our Business House sponsors.

If you prefer to use the internet, contact Mousie Skews at mousie@islandhopper.co.ck

All Golf Club Members are reminded that the AGM will be held on Saturday, December 11 at 12.30pm.

Meitaki maata to all our wonderful sponsors who contributed so generously to support golf in the Cook Islands throughout the year. We look forward to working with you in the New Year.
